Oyama is the second largest city in Tochigi with a population of 165,000. The city is centered around the Omoigawa River and Oyama Station.
Oyama City is infamous for being “close to Tokyo”. This is a reference to the shinkansen terminal that directly connects Tokyo and Oyama in 43 minutes. As a station that connects JR Shonan Shinjuku Line, JR Ryomo Line, and JR Mito Line, Oyama is a major connecting station.
What sets Oyama apart from other cities in Tochigi is the Oyama Fireworks Festival. It is arguably the best fireworks display in Tochigi Prefecture next to the Ashikaga Fireworks Festival. You can see this festival during August or late July along the Omoigawa River opposite Hakouh University. It is an easy 10 minute walk from the station and features many delicious festival food stands along the way
