Loss of Property/Theft

If something is lost or stolen from you, contact the police immediately. You can always find an officer on duty at one of the police boxes (交番 Kōban) located in every town. Ask your supervisor to show you your local police box/police station. It is advisable to also register your bicycle there, as bicycles are often the target of theft. If it gets stolen, the police may help you find it. However, if you lose something such as a bankbook, cash card, alien registration card, or passport, take the following actions:

BANK BOOK / POST OFFICE BOOK / ATM CASH CARD

Notify your bank/post office immediately to stop payment from your account.

ALIEN REGISTRATION CARD

Get a Certificate of Loss (紛失証明書, Funshitsu Shōmei-sho) from the police station and
apply for a new Certificate of Alien Registration immediately. You are advised to have a copy of the front and back of your card in a secure, separate area in case the original is lost.

PASSPORT

Get a Certificate of Loss (紛失証明書, Funshitsu Shōmei-sho) from the police and inform your embassy or consulate immediately. You are advised to have a copy of both the first page and the visa page of your passport in a secure, separate area in case the original is lost. This will make the renewal process much faster.
